Keegan-Michael Key Carlos Kotkin User rating: 6,7 / 10 Star In Sony Pictures Animation's THE STAR, a small but brave donkey named Bo yearns for a life beyond his daily grind at the village mill. One day he finds the courage to break free, and finally goes on the adventure of his dreams. On his journey, he teams up with Ruth, a lovable sheep who has lost her flock and Dave, a dove with lofty aspirations. Along with three wisecracking camels and some eccentric stable animals, Bo and his new friends follow the Star and become accidental heroes in the greatest story ever told - the first Christmas Release date: 2017.

One of my favorite jokes comes from short-lived cartoon Spliced, whose cast included a wide range of DNA-altered mutants and a regular old platypus. The gag being, of course, that platypus are weird, evolutionary aberrations – fur-coated, egg-laying, duck-billed, beaver-tailed, otter-footed mammals that can injure humans with a venomous spur and sense fish through underwater electrical currents. In an NBA world of unicorns, Ben Simmons is a platypus. The young Sixer doesnt fit into established player archetypes. Hes a strong finisher without a jump shot, an elite passer who makes questionable choices off-ball, and a 610 rebounder who lacks the complimentary post game. Even his accent slips uncomfortably between nationalities. A platypus is not meant to be judged by the standards set for predatory fish, moles, ducks, or lizards. The platypus myriad of contradictions are perfectly adapted to surviving one of the toughest environments on earth. Similarly, the problem with Simmons is not his game, but our understanding of what basketball skills should be correlated. Point or Forward? Simmons has played 94% of his minutes at the point this season (per Basketball Reference. This isnt an arbitrary designation, he primarily plays a creator role, initiating the Sixers offense and ranking top 12 in assist rate. But several factors set Simmons apart from the typical guard. For starters, his 610, 240lbs frame evokes Clint Capela more than Steph Curry. His shooting profile follows suit – in the perimeter-centric NBA, Simmons eschews the three-pointer at a historic rate. This season he is taking 92. 2% of his shots within 10 feet, a number comparable to rim-runners Andre Drummond and Montrezl Harrell. His size advantage helps him on the boards – as of today, Simmons ranks a very un-guardly 77th in rebounding rate – Dončić and Dejounte Murray are the only full-time guards who rebound at a higher rate. So, is Simmons a big? Simmons is a better finisher at the rim ( 71. 4% than Drummond and Harrell, who primarily finish off the catch or after quick one-dribble moves. But Simmons is at his best running downhill, taking most of his shots after 3 dribbles. And while the Sixers half-court struggles have been well documented, they are currently top 10 in fast break points, scoring them at a higher rate with Simmons on the court. Determining Simmons position by his defensive match-up doesnt help either. Simmons is elite defensively, a dream for the modern switch-heavy defensive system. He possesses the speed to chase guards around the perimeter, the length to contain athletic wings, and the size to body bigs and contest shots inside. One only needs to look at his performance against LeBron on Saturday to see what Simmons is capable of defensively. The combination of his size, shooting tendencies and passing make him a difficult player to categorize. His unwillingness to shoot is amplified as a point, and he requires the ball in hands far too much to function as a rim protector/roll man. But very few provide the standard of both big and guard play that Simmons does. Only LeBron and Luka Dončić outrank Simmons in both rebound and assist rate (in the case of LeBron and rebounding, that difference is less than 0. 1. No forward or center bar LeBron - who himself now spends 57% of his time at the point – is posting a higher assist rate than Simmons mark of 35. 2. Drummond and Harrell dont receive criticism for lack of shooting, and given his finishing and shot creation neither should Simmons. The Embiid-Shaped Elephant in the Room Simmons and Embiid are a tantalizing yet frustrating duo, two talented salsa dancers who inexplicably stomp on the others feet. Simmons inability to space the floor and tendency to crash the baseline on Embiid post-ups can leave the offense notably stagnant. Brett Brown has experimented with pulling Embiid out to the top of the 3, but his outside shot is not yet reliable enough to justify taking him away from the post. Despite these incompatibilities, Embiid and Simmons form the Sixers third-best regular two-man line-up. Their mix of fast and slow isnt necessarily the wrong way to play basketball in 2020, and there is precedent for a non-shooting break-happy point and a lumbering post player coexisting with success. The issue (for me at least) is the construction of the supporting cast. The Sixers front office has tried installing third stars Jimmy Butler and Tobias Harris, players far more effective in the pick and roll than spotting up from the corner. This offseasons major addition Al Horford provides great floor spacing and pick-and-pop options for Simmons, but can crowd the floor for Embiid. The result is a squad that prioritizes size and downhill dribble penetration but can get stuck in the half court – a squad that wouldve been at home in the mid ‘90s. Given the Sixers shortcomings it is easy to forget how close they were to the Conference Finals last season. If one or two shots fall differently the Sixers would have faced a Bucks squad with whom they had split their last two games. Giannis went off in both games, but Milwaukee couldnt guard Embiid either (34. 7/15. 7/8. 3 vs the Bucks in 2018-19. Its conceivable that a Sixers defense that at times stifled the Raptors creator-heavy line-ups could as least cause trouble for the Greek Freak and co. Importantly, we need to remember that certain teams cant win until they can. You couldnt win without a superstar until the 88 or 04 Pistons. It was common knowledge that small-ball jump-shooting teams couldnt win the title until the Warriors slotted Draymond into the center slot. This years Lakers have found success with a big-heavy rotation. The Sixers wont make the leap unless (or until) they do. So Who is Simmons? Comparisons to Magic and LeBron are solid if premature. His court vision and defensive talents at his size suggest that he could fill a Draymond-type role facilitating shooters. He also conjures images of a young Grant Hill – a similarly big guard who did most of his damage around the rim. With more bigs entering the league with the ability to handle and create, we might soon develop the vocabulary to describe what the young Sixer is. Until then, well have to accept that Simmons is a weird, evolutionary aberration – a non-shooting, dime-dishing, Capela-sized, fast-breaking Australian that can dunk on centers and sense teammates with the eyes in the back of his head.

2019 I hiked around 1, 400 miles over 96 days on trail in a wide variety of environs, from the Pfiffner Traverse to Hells Canyon. The annual loved and reviled one picture from every day on trail can be found here: I put more specific locations in Instagram posts at I have some specific gear reviews coming up, and maybe will get around to writing some trip reports, but this post is some general thoughts about what was new gear this year and mainstays that continue to prove their value. If you've got a question about an area in one of the pictures feel free to comment or dm. Bags and Quilts: I have something of a three headed monster system happening at the moment. An EE 40 Enigma for trips down to freezing, a Nunatak Arc 30 for trips consistently under freezing, and a Western Mountaineering Versalite 10 for snow trips. While there is no comparison between the quality of the Nunatak and WM pieces versus the EE, but the EE is absolutely serviceable for most 3 season use for me. The upping of their down fill has made a huge difference in being a little more true to rating. My last trip of the year was 8 nights on PCT sections B and C, and due to a storm more than half those nights were snow camping. I used the EE 40 inside the nunatak 30 and was surprised how toasty it was in the high teens, Id feel good pushing that system a bit further… though its still not quite the equivalent of the WM versalite it has a few advantages, like easier to do some inside the tent tasks with your arms free but still bundled up. My WM bag weighs 32. 5oz, the two quilts weigh 31. Pads: The switchback does seem to be superior to zlite both in packability and R value, though I havent looked to see if Nemo has bothered to put the R value on it yet now that the standardized test is in place. (News flash, it happened today and the R value is 2, less than expected. I have two uberlites, a torso and a full length. Ive been using the torso three season and the full length snow camping with switchback under it. After murdering my first uberlite on the Arizona Trail Ive not had any further durability issues, over 50 nights now. Im just going to chalk that up to all flora in Arizona is trying to kill you and your gear. For snow camping Ive sorta come to the conclusion that no matter how you slice it you are going to wind up with something in the neighborhood of 20oz… even if you go the lightest inflatable with the most R value (xtherm at 15oz) youll still want sizeable CCF for rest breaks and camp, so Ive veered away from the xtherm in favor of the uberlite / switchback combo. The exception is when my dog comes with me and he uses 6 sections of switchback, and carrying CCF for both of us is a little absurd. At that point I switch to an REI all season. This is an absolute bargain even at retail, but you can probably get one at a garage sale for 25 bucks and patch it up. Again, 20 ounces. Uberlight or xlite plus switchback: Around 20 ounces. Seems like a lot of ways to skin the same cat. Pillow: Hottest tip in this whole write up. The newer big sky (its frosted compared to the old one) makes a glorious lantern when you strap your headlamp to it. Shelters: My hexamid tarp probably has in the neighborhood of 4000 miles on it now, some due to shipping it off to a friend to finish up the CDT with this year. Its proved reliable far beyond my expectations. Ill be writing up a comparison of the Black Diamond Beta Light and the Durston Xmid fly only for winter backpacking, so I wont go into that too much here, but there is a lot to like about both shelters for this use. Midlayers: In the world of fleeces I used the KUIU Peleton 97 a ton this year. Its nice for moving in but provides very little warmth. What I like about it is if Im also packing my goosefeet anorak Ive got a moving midlayer and a camp / resting one for 12ish total ounces. The KUIU has some runs in it that arent impacting its function, but a little disappointing for such an expensive piece. Runs started to appear after about 5 washes. When I need something a little warmer my favorite has been the mountain hardwear half zip microchill. Listed at a variety of different and almost certainly wrong specs by MH, mine weighs 8oz in a medium. Because Im generally wearing a merino balaclava, hooded isnt a make or break part of a fleece for me. The microchill might be the best synthetic warmth per weight piece Ive ever had. It's primary downside is it attracts dog hair like a collapsed neutron star. The goosefeet anorak is a beast of warmth to weight. A little under 7oz with 3. 5 ounces of 950fp down in it. Ive finally done snow camping enough this year to propose to my Montbell Mirage Parka. Well be sending out save the date cards soon. Its like having another sleeping bag in your pack. It's hard to find anything not custom that is baffled with that down / weight ratio. Totally legit single digits camp parka. Cooking and stoves: I dont use more than 400ml for dinner on three season trips, and its hard to imagine anything lighter or more efficient than the Trail Designs 400 evernew setup using esbit. Pricey, but durable, simple, dependable, and light. I picked up a pocket rocket 2 for trips that require a stove with an ‘off switch and its a great stove and reasonably light. Its possible to get it into a toaks 700 with a canister and mini bic. I had been one of the Kovea Spider proponents as a lightweight snow melter, but mine finally bit me in the butt with a busted fuel line. Im considering an optimus vega, or trying to fine tune my Moulder strip plus pocket rocket setup. On snow trips with other people Ill use an open country pot, but if Im just melting snow for me I have no issue doing it in an MSR titan kettle. The lack of graduation markers and the aggressive fit of the lid on the Titan are annoying, but its a serviceable pot that can nest a spider type stove and canister. I tried a gossamer bamboo spoon in the hopes Mountain House cheese would not irreversibly bond to it the way it does to aluminum or titanium, but the cheese will not be denied. Additionally, trying to lick the cheese off results in tongue splinters. I will say the bamboo is my spoon of choice for snow camping, less metal in my hands the better in cold temps. Shoes: There are 7 pairs of Sportiva Bushidos in my home right now, in various states of their lifespan, Only one of those pairs is the Bushido II, which is a pretty thankfully underwhelming update if you really love this shoe. While there are slight material changes there is not much practical difference in the updates fit or feel. The Salomon X Ultra Mid Winter Cs Wp (someone needs to be fired for that name) has absolutely changed my fourth season hiking, Ive never had an insulated boot that feels as much like a trail runner as this boot does. A point of annoyance is that my spike size for these boots is just large enough that my trail runner spikes dont fit it. Another excuse to buy more things. Le sigh. If you find yourself dreading winter trips because youve been floating around in trail runners for years, these are worth a shot. Pants: After several years I finally killed a pair of rustic ridge convertible pants, albeit falling 10 feet on a vertical slab scrambling (er, falling) down Mt Stone in the Olympics. These trusty 20 dollar all polyester pants were undefeated up to this point, from Baja to the Winds. Mt Stone is off my Olympics route, but if you do descend the west side of Stone pour one out for my pants. My Montbell convertible rain pants continue to be a fun PNW spring option, basically functioning as a rain skirt and allowing me to pack legs for a 2oz penalty and hike in the shorts alone, which is way more pleasant than it sounds. In the world of wind pants my tachyon pants disappeared (they're somewhere in my apartment, I'm sure of it) and I switched to MB Dynamos, the leg zip is worth being able to get them on and off with taking off my shoes. Sun Hoodie: I jumped on the sun hoodie train this year with the Mountain Hardwear Crater Lake hoodie, which is a fine piece, but as your main hiking top on an extended trip it eventually is a bit of a claustrophobic feeling versus a button up. I thought this might be my bridge back to a more youthful look, but its Silver Ridge shirts and Tilley hats for me. Rain Jackets: I switched to the updated Montbell Versalite, the gore material is better than their previous in house DWR. It remains my primary three season rain shell. Also new this year is a skylight gear sil anorak that weighs around 3. 5oz thats a fun thing to have for weekenders where the forecast is fair or trips where I dont really expect to be moving a ton with a shell on. Its a great but limited application piece. Snowshoes: I switched from Lightning Ascents to Evo Ascents to have a smaller unibody construction. Im terribly rough on gear and often in places with limited maneuverability. What you give up versus the lightnings is the rear crampon, which I have not noticed at all. I did make this switch shortly before MSR updated their binding system, so I cant speak to the new bindings. I dont have any major issues with the old binding system. CAMP CHAIR BLASPHEMY: I've found on snow trips the Big Agnes Cyclone chair kit is a winner. Basically the same as the thermarest trekker or any kit that makes a ground chair out of your pad, the MOTHER OF COMFORT has constructed the lightest one at 4. 7oz. Why do I think this is a good UL decision? Because in from late November to Mid January you're done hiking at 430pm, and having the insulation on your back while you sit down is kinda a big deal. If there is an eager MYOG'er out there listening, this is totally something that could weigh less with arrow shafts and gridstop or dcf. An indepth comparison of the beta light and xmid is coming soon, until then. HIKE ON.

Thanks for the words of encouragement folks~ Let' things don't get too distasteful from here, it der. A continuation from and not much action but. a lore dump. Then we can move on to the action and fun stuff of the Gaian's bumbling about Hierarchy space. Revelations Formal First Contact Hierarchy Border world Z979 Log of Hierarchy First Contact Officer Endala Im writing this down, as per protocol, before physical first contact is made with the fledgling race. We have arrived to Border world Z979, a simple military outpost on the edge of Hierarchy space intended to be a simple early warning system for something from the unknown regions. Inspections verified that its sensors were intact, which raises the question of how this species got here. Their ship did not use any known method of FTL. All FTL ships radiate the same energy signature in order to go in and out of FTL travel, and yet they didnt set it off. It is clearly not a stealth vessel, claiming to be an explorer ship. An explorer ship armed with no less than eight magnetic propulsion projectile cannons, one hundred fourteen smaller rapid fire projectile weapon systems, and one forward facing energy weapon of obscene size. Not to mention the insane size of the ship itself. Fifteen thousand meters in length, angular spear is intimidating, unsettling to look at. And then the fact it has no shielding. They are a truly primitive people. And, as per protocol, we established basic communication, their translators and ours working to get the basic concepts across. We wanted information, specifically language to make communication easy, as well as anything else they were willing to share on their people. Customs, art, anything really to learn about these people. They sent over a crate. I watched as the box flew over to us, propelled, with surprising grace, by little jets of air guiding it to one of our airlocks. In the box we found a cooling unit containing what we assume to be genetic samples, though we were given four samples, two red, two black with silver specs. A dual species coming from a single world? Not unheard of but extremely rare. A smaller crate inside was opened and revealed a sculpture of some kind, presumably one of their important figures. A being clad in armor, carrying a shield on their left arm, a large blunt hammer in the other. Two arms, two legs, head, the rest of the figure was hidden under whatever the armor was, so we still have no idea what these people look like without the armor, but it was a good clue to their culture, Armor provides protection, and the shield? More defense. Hammer? A blunt instrument, used for building things, so these were a people who defended a built we surmised. Explains their massive ship. There was a computer device as well. Similar to our own computer tablets, though with far less processing power or storage space, sluggish controls, and seemingly no support for cerebral cybernetic uplinking, but perhaps thats what this “Wireless BlueTooth” system was? Speculation. We found a language database, twenty different languages. Two species, twenty languages? Thankfully one was ranked above the others, a dominant language but they havent subjugated the other languages before going out into space? Remarkable. A display of unity despite differences, so far these Gaians were shaping up to be respectable beings. Diverse and able to work through that for a common goal. Language was plugged into our translators and went to work, while that churned along I explored more of their culture, music was loaded onto their device and I decided to take a listen. It as well. Some of it aggressive, others lax. So far among the rather vast selection they provided, I find myself leaning towards this Jazz genre, perhaps I'll have more appreciation for the others when the translator can make the lyrics understandable. While this is going on the science folk are studying the genetic samples, grumbling that they didnt use stasis technology and simply threw it in something cold. Good thing blood didnt need to be warm to study. I reviewed the Liath Betas report of their encounter with the Gaian Imperium. The “Hammer and Shield of the people”. They responded to a barely understood distress beacon and defended a pointless world from what they viewed was a hostile aggressive it was. The Nymphilian fleet were wanting to prove themselves in the eyes of the Hierarchy that they could stand watch and chose a respectable target, right on the fringe of our borders where it would be difficult for us to respond in time. In fact it took my ship two days to arrive. So far everything was showing these Gaians as commendable beings. Hearty and enduring. Their ship withstood an impressive amount of firepower, Nymphilian ships are some of the hardest for them to be outgunned by kinetic weaponry? No wonder they refer to themselves as “The Hammer and shield” blunt objects, they brute force their way through they have no horns visible in the statue. Perhaps a hard head plate? Best not to speculate, dont want to unconsciously look upset when their perceived appearance doesnt match their actual one. We made formal vocal communication after some time, finding a suitable frequency their systems could handle that wasnt difficult for ours to understand. The first thing they said? “We, The people of Gaia, Come in peace. To protect the weak from their aggressors. And we really hope we arent on the wrong side of a war here. ” I explained the situation to them, a bit of conflict resulting in Liath Beta losses is how things function, and that they wouldnt be penalized for ‘Bloodying Nymphilian Noses as they put it. We assured them that everything was fine, it was how things went. A species gets uppity, does a display of strength, loses some people but in the end comes out stronger after a bruising. With that out of the way we set up a meeting to have them come onboard my vessel for proper introductions, get first impressions out of the way to report back to our higher ups so the leaders of our people could get together and hash out big picture details. Their shuttle came over, an odd looking thing. Shaped like a fat avian, angular and. a bit intimidating. Three people exited the shuttle, their representative and two guards. All clad head to toe in armor, though the representative had some kind of coat overtop of their armor. The guards with here posing, and they had something of tensity to them, something that tickled at my long forgotten instincts from behind their covered faces. Though eventually the representative removed their mask, revealing That straight forward gaze, those lips curled and fangs, yes fangs, barred at me. Then they bowed. “Admiral Elly Santos, coming aboard Hierarchy Diplomatic vessel. ” The documents I read said they display their front teeth with a curl of their lips as a greeting. It made no mention of fangs. Im fairly certain I had gulped loud enough for them to hear as they stood straight up again. “Ah, I must be intimidating. Being your size in height. ” I regained my composure and cleared my throat. “I apologize, culture shock, you must understand. We have never encountered. anything like you. ” I nervously chuckle. “I am First Contact Officer Endala Yulna, pleasure to meet you at last. ” A chuckle comes from Elly. “Oh boy, then you need to steel yourself, and your higher ups, cause there is a lot stranger folk back home than me. ” I stare at them, then, without knowing what else to do present my hand for their hand shake. At least that was common enough. They took my hand and shook it before nodding. “So, My superiors are days away still, I assume yours milarly, how do you wish to conduct this? ” I blink and simply motioned for them to follow. “Standard procedure. We meet, sit down, discuss with each other. We will make mistakes so the higher ups dont. ” I looked behind me at Elly, their guards were with them still. They moved, I was surprised to see them there as I didnt hear them following with us. Elly simply nodded in agreement to my statement. We reached the door to the meeting room I entered first and Elly followed behind, arms crossed behind their back. Their guards silently took positions outside the door and stayed there as it closed. I found myself staring at Ellys face. Something about it was. familiar, hauntingly so. Something in the back of my mind was. terrified of this being in front of me. Now I am a Gome, my species are on average a little more than a meter tall, most beings are much larger than us and intimidating. This not intimidating, they were ticking some deep fear inside of me. Something long forgotten. “Well, lets get settled in and trip over our feet and make mistakes where it doesnt matter, hmm? ” Elly stated the truth, and snapped me out of my stupor. I suppressed that new emotion of terror for the time being and focused on my duty. “So, your Imperium? There for your people are Gaians yes? ” Elly gave a nodding shrug. “Our collective people, yes. Individually though, I am a Human. Homo Sapien of Gaia. We nically two subspecies and one alien species living in the Imperium. ” I recalled now, four vials, one of each species? I wonder what the lab results would be. “Four different species? How did that come to be? The blood samples sent over two were different from the others, but they looked the same as each other. ” With a nod and chuckle from Elly they leaned back to get comfortable in the chair. Mercifully they had the same basic anatomy as most sentient beings. “For starters, we have been dealing with alien influence a while. ” I was about to ask questions before they chuckled. “Ill get to it eventually. Simply put a meteor crashed on Gaia during our. Unification war, a period in our history ill be happy to discuss later but for now lets address your first question. ” Oh so many questions I had already! But I let them continue. “Admittedly, this is speculation on how it arrived to earth, we werent able to track down the exact meteor, all we know is a meteor shower rained on Gaia, and a few months after that some of our vehicles were rangely. ” “ in motorized transportation? ” Elly nodded and continued. “As I said, the vehicles started Hulls became damp and cool, strange silver veins grew along the inside of the critical components. After a few weeks the vehicles became flooded with some kind of nanite fluid. ” Clearing their throat and seemingly thinking back on the details of the events. “So a handful of our single person motorcycles to heavily armored tanks were quarantined, studied, and taught. ” I simply blinked and stared. “You mean to tell me, a nanite virus infected your technology and made it sentient? ” Elly raised their hands up and shrugged their shoulders, this being translated as a vague ‘I know as much as you do at this point. Elly simply leaned forward and sighed. “I mean, you guys got vanced tech right? Surely you lot have heard of weirder stuff right? ” I simply shake my head. “How many firsts are you people going to bring to the Hierarchy? Youre already the first species whom on first contact managed to ward off a fleet of some of our best ships, and your ship is, according to you, not even an aggressive model. ” Elly simply grinned, I flinched a moment as my translator told me their face was one of pride. “Yeah, we made Columbus there tough, never know what you might find out in the black of space. ” Clearly a paranoid what about that smile bothers me so much? Elly simply shifted in their seat again. “So, We decided to call the virus the Dire Machine virus, or cause scientists are nerds at heart and love in jokes. From that we made steps to properly incorporate this new species into our growing society. We We werent at we were trying to peacefully conquer the globe. But Im rambling…” Clearing their throat again. “We incorporated these new beings into our ranks, things were Tensions between us, other nations worried about this ‘nanite plague infecting vehicles. The other nations as kind as we were in our studies of the Dire machines. And we obably more lax than we should have been teractions between people and the Dires…” Elly fidgets, a hint of embarrassment on their face. “And so we discovered that the nanite virus does affect organic given repeated exposure. And it manages to convert enough of an individual they grow an organic steel like material on their extremities, hands and feet mostly. And with that are capable no point beating around the bush, successful breeding between the two, resulting in what we refer to as Technomorphs. ” So the Gaian Imperium has. a race of living sentient machines with them. The idea of a subservient species isnt that foreign to the Hierarchy, quite a few races have been uplifted for that purpose. And robot helpers are, again, needed in many areas. How ever, Machine life? Sentient technology that they umbled across by chance? “You realize this is. extremely farfetched, yes? ” I asked Elly, staring at them while typing this down. “Well, considering we colonized our whole solar system, and went many empty solar systems with no signals, no signs of life, nothing. We picked up nothing on long range sensors, nothing at all until that distress signal. And we barely heard that. All we understood was “Help, In trouble” and came to assist. I say that should speak for who we are as a people, rather than what makes up our flesh and blood. ” I have to admit, a point. “Very well, and I take it are going to be part of the delegation meeting with the higher ups? ” Elly blinked with confusion and cleared their throat. “Ah, no. That would be is two humans, like myself, and one anthropomorphic being. ” I put on my best ‘I am waiting for you to explain face and Elly obliged. “Right, I mentioned the Dire Machine thing because it leads into how the Anthros eated. As I said, around the time of the Unification wars things aotic. We had this one organization, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. P. E. T. A. despite their name the opposite. During the chaos of our Imperium growing they creasingly hostile, becoming a terrorist organization even. And they got ahold of a D1R3 that the Americans were toying with to try and make super PETA decided to stuff it full of animal genetics and release it into the wild. All over. ” With a groan Ellys hands slide across their face. “Thankfully all they did was cause new born people to be born traits. Thats how it started anyway. Some child born in germany with fox ears and a tail. Months later another born in egypt with scales and a serpent tongue and nally a year after that the first fully anthropomorphic being, a cat, was born in switzerland. This was because PETA in way, wanted to bridge the gap between man and animal, to ‘humanize animals so people dont abuse them as they claimed. So, yeah, it worked? The Imperium simply shrugged and accepted them as people, as we had done with the Dire Machines. More people, more strength. Other so much, but Im rambling history again. ” I finished typing for a moment and focused on them. “So not only have your people survived a potentially dangerous nanite viral outbreak that could have crippled your infrastructure, you survived a potential schism in your species due to this nanite virus converting your you survived a bioweapon outbreak that was threatening to replace the dominant species with. a variety of other species? ” Im just staring at them, these people have gone through so much old are they as a species? How long ago has this happened? “On top of all that, I dont even know how long ago this was for your people. ” “ yeah when you put it like that it of amazing we survived all that. But it did come with a cost later on… would be something for the higher ups to discuss. I wont touch on that topic here. But …little more than half a millennium ago our time? Ever year is a rotation of Gaia around our for us the year thousand six hundred and seventy eight AD. Unification started around Two thousand and fifty six and all this happened over the course years during that time. ” I have no references for the revolution speed of their planet around their sun, but it cant vary that much from other life sustaining worlds. similar. Either way, it appears to have been a long time in their past from how they speak about it. And still their technology is this primitive? “That is. I am guessing here after all, a long time. How has your technology vanced? ” I heard a strange tone from Elly, my translator picking it up as ‘mock offense. “Why I never, we have advanced technologically a great deal since then! Gauss weaponry has been perfected, we have also perfected slip space travel AND terraforming of worlds! ” They responded to my statement of facts and responded with a joke, showing that what I said might be considered an insult. Something to note to the council. “Pardon, but compared to the technology is woefully out of date. No shield technology, still using kinetic projectile weaponry as your main offensive and defensive tools, and not to mention your portable computer technology. And dont even get me started on what ever insane method you use to travel, every species the Hierarchy has found or discovered used the same basic principles for faster than light space travel, it all produces the same energy signature no matter how they actually get the engines going. ” Elly grinned that prideful and terrifying smile again. “Slip space drives. Massive gravity well is created and we…curve space between the point where our ship is, and where our destination is. Near instant travel, but has a range limit. We had to jump three times before reaching this planet. ” The insanity of it all. The absolute insanity. “You…” I stammer. “ an artificially created gravity just…fly to where you need to be? That…” “Is the most awesome method of space travel. I know! Out of our best science fiction! ” I gasp. “Its insane! Dangerous! How do your people survive the intense gravity? ” “I tificial gravity dampeners on the ship. Plus a sturdy hull. Everything is designed to compensate for the travel. How does your FTL stuff work? ” With a groan I lean forward, stroking my horns with a sign. I have just been given a bombshell of a technological difference. “Ship mass is manipulated by the FTL drive and it is accelerated at a faster than light speed. The energy signature generated by such is. unmistakable, its how we find worlds to welcome to the Hierarchy because the method you described was deemed scientifically unsound, unsafe, and lethal to the occupants on board the vessel! ” Elly simply blinked. “Did you ever try it? ” Of all the questions. “No! The energy needed wasnt a problem, its just a matter of intense gravity, not to mention hazardous radiation from the energy sources needed is intensely lethal to all life. ” Elly nodded. “Yeah, nuclear fission is a bitch to deal with, still amazed Vodka helps. But those who do end up with cancer due to improper shielding of engine compartments are given the best care. Many make a full recovery. ” I did not just hear that. I refuse to believe what I just heard. “Your people are going to be given so many sanctions for endangerment of yourselves. ” Elly looks at me with obvious confusion. “You just said you have a nuclear fission engine for your ships, yes? I did hear that correctly despite my intense desire to wish I didnt. ” Elly simply nodded and I slump back in my chair. “That technology has been banned beginning of the Hierarchy. Elly simply nods, clearly making mental notes. “Well then. Give us the tech and we can see about refitting our ships with your superior methods. ” I let out a groan and mimic Ellys earlier action. Hands across my face in mild frustration. “…” I remembered something. “You managed to colonize an entire star system yes? And you have visited many since? How many colonies do you have, how many ships that you can sually offer to refit all of them with new tech? How can you afford that? ” That grin again. “Afford? As ” Oh I swear if this Imperium somehow is working off a tribal barter system instead of a monetary one I am going to retire immediately after this even in the middle of it. They are proving to be the very opposite of what I had seen! “Yes! Money, how do you people get anything done if you dont exchange currency for tasks and duties? Its what keeps people motivated and working. ” They laughed softly and simply stared down while doing so. “Oh, please forgive me, its we followed some rules of ours when we created the Imperium. The goal was to make a culture to unify our planet, be welcoming of all and do our best so they keep their culture while following our laws. We believed that for a civilization to, accepted into galactic society we would have to be of a certain society sophistication. Something resembling a Utopia, meaning no homeless, no people going hungry, the needs of life for even the lowest of our society would be provided for. ” “We have all those things, yes, but money is still used within cultures and between species to exchange for technology, information, all manner of things. ” A sigh escapes me as I type away. “You are a strange people. How do you motivate your people without money then? If all their needs are met, how do they not just laze about and do nothing? ” “Two reasons. One, our people can not be idle. Always mething. When given the freedom to choose what they want to do though. without the worry of not having a home, without the worry of ‘will I have enough money for food, they focus on their desires, goals, pursuits with intensity. ” A proud smile on Ellys face as I examine their words, what kind of people cant be idle? “Second. We have a hierarchy to our society. There are the Migrants and the Citizens. Now for needs, even most wants, are addressed. Migrants get group housing in apartment complexes, Citizens get their own homes. Migrants use public transportation, Citizens can own their own vehicle. Migrants can have certain quality of food, Citizens can get higher quality. Those that perform well can become a citizen, or earn a boon such as one of the benefits that citizens have. ” I simply nod my head. A caste system, crude but. effective. Work your way up society. Im still fixated on the need for activity. Most races in the Hierarchy have bursts of energy, but all of them can very easily become complacent and lazy and do anything. “That ceptable. But your lack of a monetary system will be. difficult to get over. ” A sigh escapes Elly as their head leans back before they lean forward again. “Precious metals, rare minerals. The universal currency is materials. Your people no doubt have a price for Gold, Iron, other such materials. We can offer these up in exchange for your currency from there. Internally we will never again adopt a monetary system. It and corruption in our people. And I feel bad for the people who become the treasurers… inquisitors will be keeping an eye on them. ” Elly shudders at the mention of quisitors. “And these Inquisitors internal police force I presume? ” The word translated to range. Seeker of Truth. Elly nodded. “They were the founding of the Terran Imperium. The first stage of our Imperium when we set out to conquer all of Gaia…” A proud lancholy expression Ellys face. “They were made by Maritrixis, a strange alien whom our founders discovered out in the desert. Some forgotten nazi scientist lab trying to uncover the secrets of her people. She aided the founders of our Imperium, gifted them the only technology she had to created the Inquisition. No one but the Inquisition knows how the Inquisitors are made. But they mething else. Unyielding. Incorruptible seekers of truth. ” I simply scoff. “Incorruptible? Anyone can be tempted, swayed somehow, to go against their for a brief moment. A look the other way over some trivial matter. Elly stared at me with an intensity that made me want to curl in on myself. “ Not the inquisitors. I dont know how they do it, but in the entire history of our Imperium not a one has ever turned against the imperium or its ideals, they would sooner die. Itmething in how they are are chosen, those who show devotion to the Imperial ideals are taken, trained survive and become Inquisitors. ” I managed to regain myself after their moment tense passion. “And these people to police you? Tell you what to do? ” Elly groans. “They dont do that, they make sure the politicians dont get power hungry or try to change things that would bring about the collapse of the imperium, or corrupt it from within. ” Clearing their throat. “We are the Hammer and Shield. Because we are Strong. The Strong protect the Weak. And We are the Hammer and Shield. ” A matra of some kind, the Gaian peoples creed it would seem. An admirable statement. “Still quisitors, surely they have some oversight. Someone they report to? They cant an elected… your leaders are elected yes? ” Elly chuckled and nodded. “Yes, we elect our leaders and yes they can remove and elected official from office by extreme force if needed. So far in our entire history that happened. How ever governors of colonies and the like have gotten uppity, they were mercifully removed from office by the people, a vote of no then quietly taken away by Inquisitors to make sure their ideals had not spread to others. ” That was a scary thought. “ was Maritrixis? You said an alien that aided your people? Its not uncommon for worlds to have ran into a lone being from another world but for them to have aided you in such a way rious. ” A potentially unknown race aided in ‘uplifting these people and left these Inquisitors behind to keep them in check. This has ‘Moltok incident all over Liath are probably behind this. Elly smiles, Ill never get over that threat display display of happiness and as a people. “She alien. Eight foot tall, pale white skin, solid ebony eyes, no have some historical recordings of her I can share with you, but just imagine me but much taller, much paler, and my eyes all black. ” Elly smiled again just as I envisioned what she said. That is why she terrified me., Prometheans were long dead at worse, myth at best! I must be not remembering correctly, ill have to examine these records of Ellys. For now, on with the meeting. “And she just did this out of kindness of her heart? She practically uplifted your people from the sound of things. Without her you probably would have collapsed and never made it where you are now. ” With a nod of agreement Elly resumed speaking. “That is very much true. She gave us the matter conversion technology, and the inquisitors to police the founders set the ideals the inquisitors would ensure. The strong protect the weak, never oppress. We will always seek peaceful resolution to societal conflicts, never seek active if such cannot be achieved we will hold no punches should it come to war. ” A chuckle escaped Elly. “The Imperator said it best. “War is what happens when civilizations fail. If it comes to war, civilization will not hinder or impact War. We can and will beat you into submission. We will leave you scarred after the conflict in such ways you never consider war again. And always live in fear of having to do it again. Always hoping, praying, we never again have to unleash that horror upon others or ourselves. ” I she passed on peacefully. ” I have so many questions. Address in chronological order. “Excuse me, Matter conversion technology? That is a wholly unstable and dangerous technology. Breaking down materials into raw atoms and reconstructing them as something else requires…” And then it hits me. Their nuclear wonder they love it so much, THAT much power, unstable as it may be, would allow them to power such a dangerous technology. “Never mind, youve told me about your fission still for it to create a stable math just isnt there yet. And this alien you the technology? ” “The base materials still have to milar. And we still have to have a blueprint of the end result material. The problem will be a copy of the blueprint. So say we took dirt and made it into sand. We have a few hundred variations of sand, but there are billions of variations of dirt is converted only into that few hundred variations. Kinda oning matter almost. And, energy limitations as can only make so much of a resource a day, and we still have to consume enough other raw matter to compensate. ” Elly clears their throat and leans forward. “Does trading a thousand kilograms of lead for a hundred kilograms of gold sound like a fair trade? ” I shake my head, so the technology has conversion limits, and they still require mining. “So what good does this technology do you then? ” I inquired with a growing curiosity. Elly simply chuckled. “Feeds us. The basic needs of life to replicate. Grain to feed our farm animals, raw materials to build housing and roads. Its fantastic for recycling. ” a good point. Any waste materials could be broken down and remade into something similar, but useful. And these people have it little with it. But I have done much. Their people dont starve without the need of firm coaxing to work. I returned to an unanswered question “ Maritrixis, you never did say why she helped your people. ” Ellys face flushed red. “Ah, right, I rambled, forgive me, nostalgia for history, a personal weakness. She helped us were her children. ” No, no, no. Do not say what I think youre going to say next, please… “She said her people seeded our world with life, millenia ago. And that her Their hubris brought about their end. Greed, paranoia, cruelty. We had inherited that from her yet the founders presented her That her children, the legacy of her people, need not suffer the faults of the parents. And so when they asked for her aid in building a new questioned them. Endlessly, tirelessly. ” Elly shrugs her shoulders. “Records from that time colored, written after the events. Suffice to say they impressed her with their tenants, with who they were as their reluctance to accept her gift. “The founders the conversion be purposefully reduced? It was capable of direct energy to matter conversions, but the efficiency was massively reduced to the point we have to use half a dyson sphere just to make a few thousand kilograms of t matter what kind of material we make, but it requires an obscene amount of power. The white death, the plague bearers, the great Deathworlder cant be coincidence. The description while vague similar. Seeders of planets, matter conversion technology. They were a horror story, great beings who wiped worlds clean of life and replaced it with their own. Beings who had the technology to create worlds from nothing. The great architects of the galaxy that burned themselves into non existence with their unspeakable weaponry that they unleashed on themselves in envy of each other. And Im sitting in a meeting room with one of their. possibly only remaining creations. council must be made aware of this. present the information as I have it here. They will hopefully come to the same conclusion as find something I missed and it will have all just been my imagination from stress. I very much hope for the latter. “You alright over there? You look like youre having an existential crisis. ” I snap out of my own mind and chuckle nervously. “Ah, kinda. You are a strange technology is something that the Hierarch-” Im cut off by Elly abruptly. “No. Non negotiable. As per Imperial Doctrine the MCT will remain forever under direct Imperial control due to its hazardous nature and ability to decimate civilizations not ready to receive it. ” should have been expected but that was tensely spoken. Imperial Doctrine? “I can understand, but the council that as leverage to sanction your people rather. harshly. ” “Let me and informal for a moment. ” Elly adjusted their coat over their armored suit. “We wish for peaceful interactions with your Hierarchy. That is all. We will not be ruled by you, because you can not rule are beyond your borders. At most we will request explorers be allowed to traverse your that we will request and require little of your Hierarchy. We have survived just fine without you until now, we will continue to do so. ” Elly stands up, I'm reminded of I am compared to them. “We will not be politically bullied into releasing a potential plague upon your people. And should your bosses view that as a threat…” Oh that I fear that smile on Ellys face. “Remind them that one of our explorer ships, not even a war ship, stood its ground against ten of your best ships. We mine entire worlds by cracking them into chunks and breaking them down in the void of space. ” Elly lets out a sigh that melancholy expression on their face again. “ let us go about in peace. We do not wish for war, but if comes to, you seem to have a fear of nuclear power. We on the other hand love thats not even the worst of our weaponry. ” Nuclear weaponry? The Imperium has Nuclear Weaponry? Its bad enough they are using it for powering their ships, but as a weapon of war? And. I then realized I was cowering in my chair. “I believe ncludes any potential slip ups for our higher ups to avoid, yes? ” I am mentally drained from all of this. These psychotic people that may very well be the inheritors of the Promethean legacy. “Uh, yes, please. I will advise my higher ups as best they can to into the same pitfalls I did. ” With that Elly nodded and bowed, their hand over their chest. “And I shall do the same. ” iendly smile unnerves me. More so now than it did cause I understand why it unnerves me. We have record of the Prometheans. The only reason we know anything at all many different species with similar stories. Tales of powerful beings visiting their worlds, watching them, white skin, eyes of the void, predatory that. smile of theirs. Those world under the Hierarchy has an instinctual response of terror when exposed to an image of an entity of that design. Now most species have instinctual responses to stimuli, some salivate at the smell of certain leaves or burning of wood, others at the sight of the food itself rather than the smell. Occasionally two species share similar stimuli from the same source. But for hundreds of species to all share this instinctual response to these beings? To have similar stories of these predators from the stars? Its theorized the Prometheans seeded all life in the galaxy and as such left their mark, this instinctual fear of them, in every sentient what purpose? Speculation leads why would anything want to be feared? To subjugate, dominate uncontested. And beings No trace of them is seen. No ruins, have been discovered, nothing showing they existed at all, its all just. speculation. Theories. As such its treated as fiction. I am distrubed by a ping on my system. The information from Elly had arrived. Historical documents to pour over, cultural customs, things like that to go over with a fine tooth comb. And to of this Maritrixis. I am not so proud as to admit I became paralyzed. I stared at the image., staring into me from the ancient still image. I arently stopped breathing as well, as my head soon started pounding from lack of air and I breathed and snapped out of my stupor. I flagged the images with a warning and simply moved the information onto someone else. I. I am retiring.

Approximately 500 thousand kilometers long, computers cant extrapolate the cause. ” Panic rose quickly in the new crew members voice, his mandibles retracting into its facial cavity and his antenna straight up. “On screen. ” The captain didnt even look up from her hand held console, she wasnt worried about some gravity well or worm hole or whatever the hell was blocking their path. She simply wanted to deliver their cargo from point A to B and finally take that vacation shes been putting off. She also wanted to keep reading about the new elected leader on Randi III, but she put the handheld down and focused. The screen hummed, indicating it was on, yet it stayed completely black. “Jesus, Kavrell, first you overload our energy capacitors, then you nearly depolarize our engine couplers, and now you cant even put an image on screen? What do I pay you for? ” She stomped over and rolled Kavrells chair out of the way. She pushed a few buttons, and yet nothing happened. Her eyebrows met together in the middle as she attempted to mentally troubleshoot. “Full stop. Maybe you messed up the damn sensor array too. ” She jogged over to a little monitor in the back of the bridge. Meanwhile, Kavrell started tinkering with a few buttons, his 4 spindly arms mashing some buttons combinations. A few presses later he let out a few clicks of satisfaction as an idea popped in his head. “Outlining shape based on electron dispersal pattern. ” The main screen flashed and the whole screen was filled with inky tendrils outlines in milky white lines. The tendriled creature made the cargo ship look tinier than normal, a speck of dust in the grand cosmic stage. Its tendrils writhed around the screen, seemingly grasping for something like a toddler. “ has to be a sensor malfunction. ” The captains voice was barely louder than a whisper, and her jaw nearly scrapped the floor. She had read the old stories of the famed Kraken, the giant squid which devoured ships for lunch, but she never assumed she would be a main character in the story. Actually, she thought, the kraken could be a 100x bigger than described and it still wouldnt stand out against whatever the hell faced them. In space, many things were described as big. A planet is big. A star is big. But a giant space monster with more tendrils than a beach has grains of sand? A giant space monster large enough to block out the light of not one, but multiple stars? Thats huge. The captain took a deep breath, steeling herself for whatever this adventure would hold. “Kavrell, leave a beacon behind us transmitting to all ships: Trade route closed, set viewer for electron dispersal. The ship Antigone 1308 has gone out to investigate. ” “Investigate? ” Kavrell spun his chair around. His eyes where bigger than normal, and his antenna were quivering slightly. ‘I shouldnt have gotten on a ship with a human he thought to himself. “Did I stutter? Take us in slowly. Make sure not to hit anything along the way, youve probably heard what happens when a kalorian crystal gets too excited. ” The captain tried to relax as she leaned back in her chair, but she gripped the seats arm rest hard enough to pale her knuckles. A small bead of sweat rolled down her temple. A half hour later, Kavrell slowed the ship to a crawl. The sensors read the distortion almost directly in front of them. “Captain, I think if we keep a continuous electron pulse we can track the sensor distortion and make a rudimentary map. ” “Try it, turn on the view screen and make it half normal view and half your map. ” The view screen hummed once again. Half of it showed the ship in a 3D space, walls of flesh moving around it. The other half was completely black, fully enveloped in a void. The darkness wasnt the normal darkness of space, out there theres plenty of stars to light up the path. In wherever they were, the darkness seemed to eat at whatever light it could, absorbing all of it from the ship. “Kavrell, start a low intensity beam, width of 5 meters, random wave lengths excluding visible light. Direct it to the nearest wall. ” Kavrells quivering arm extended towards a few buttons. A few beeps later and a low hum was heard as the beam shot from the ship. “Kavrell, is it me or is the darkness moving? ” Her leg bounced as she stared ahead. “I see it too! Im stopping the beam! ” The wall of void moved up like a curtain. It started slowly, freezing the two audience members in anticipation (but mainly fear. The curtain sped up, faster and faster, the wall of void pulling up at speeds near imperceptible, all to reveal an eye. The eye shifted its gaze for the disturbance, until it settles on the ship. If sound traveled through space, the creatures roar wouldve sounded deafening. On the outside, the ship was screeching in terror. It was akin to a small mouse accidentally waking a tiger. The various external lights turned off and on as power rerouted about. On the inside, all hell was broken loose. Kavrells antenna buzzed for pure fear, his spindly arms vibrating enough to produce a low hum. His mandibles chittered like a maraca. The captain whizzed around faster than she had ever moved, yelling orders as she herself navigated the various consoles around the bridge. “Life support set to reserve power! ” “Rerouting power from weapon systems to cargo bay shields! ” “Environmental controls on reserve! ” “Lighting system rerouted to thrusters! ” “Available power up 100% than normal, rerouting all to thrust! ” “Engaging neural link! ” Red lights flashed all throughout the ship, almost as if it knew the situation it was in. The captain pushed a button on her arm rest and a panel on the side opened up. She yanked a cable and shoved it into the port at the base of her skull. Under normal circumstances, one must ease into the connection, slowly accustoming their thoughts to the ship. But these were not normal circumstances. “Were getting out of here! ” She yelled. She pulled the ship around to face where they came from, and she speed through the maze of tentacles that materialized. It was quite a sight to watch a ship weave through the maze, whizzing left, right, up, and down in a mad dash to escape the unnamed beast. But the captain wasnt perfect, no human is. Seemingly out of no where, a tentacle slapped the ship to the side. Alarms blared and every console on the ship lit up red. “Damage report! ” “Shields at 2% containment field on the crystals nearly destabilized! ” The captain pressed a few buttons and cargo bay doors slammed open. The crystal chest was sucked into space, and the ship was exploded forward, faster than the already breakneck speed it was going at. The crystal chest, not avoiding them like the ship was, slammed into a tentacle. The resulting explosion spewed plasma everywhere, the debris slamming into whatever was around. “Captain, the tentacles are making an opening! It looks like we damaged the beast! ” He highlighted it on the view screen, and she instantly capitalized on the opportunity. They shot out of the hole expecting the same empty space they left, but lights blinded the ship from all angles. “What the hell. ” she slowly eased the cable out of her head with one hand and blocked the lights with the other. When her eyes finally finished adjusting, she let out a huge sigh. The silver flagship of the intergalactic military, the Opal, was towering in front of them. Floating beside her where a few other ships, each with their own weapons array flaunting the might of the military. A few news ships were scattered aways, with their drones weaving in between ships. She straightened her posture and pressed a button on her chair. ” “This is the cargo freighter Antigone 1308-“ “Move your ship. Im Admiral Dormir Ka. ” “Pleasure to meet you, ” her voice laced with sarcasm, “Admiral. However, I would like to know what you plan to do to this creature. ” “Kill it. ” “Figured. Im afraid I cant let you do that Admiral. ” “Do not make this harder than it needs to be, Human. Your kind love to stick its noses where they neednt be. ” His face contorted with rage, and although he wasnt yelling he sure seemed like he wish he could. “Are you ready to slaughter two innocent civilians on live TV? Admiral, that creature behind us has the same right to be here as we do. ” “I can have you thrown in jail for obstruction, Human. Move. ” “Make me. ” She pressed a button and the screen flickered off. “Captain, are you out of your mind! First you make us get close to that thing and now youre standing your ground against the military? ” “Kavrell, shut up. My head hurts from that damn link. ” She walked up to the console and eased the ship back closer to the beast. She knew it was stupid, she knew she might be thrown in jail, and she knew that the creature just tried to kill them, but something inside her told her to stand her ground. For she knew it was better to take a stand against an unjust law then to stand alongside it. The creature had the same right to be there as they did, and she knew that. “Hows our shields, Kavrell? ” “Down to 1. The plasma explosion nearly knocked them out, but Im not sure if theyll hold much longer. ” “Then well hold as long as we can. ” And with that, the small mouse stood between the swords of the government and the sleeping tiger.

The Star Watch Full length. The star watch full length 2017. Artist: Sadistik Album: Haunted Gardens Listen: YouTube Spotify Apple Music Background by /u/TheNTSocial Sadistik hails from gloomy Seattle but bases himself in LA these days. He came onto the indie rap scene with his debut LP The Balancing Act in 2008, and since then has refined himself into one of the most technically skilled rappers around while still rooting his music in bleak but visceral imagery and explorations of pain in various forms. His aesthetic may not be for everyone, but his abilities as a rapper are undeniable, and if his themes resonate with you, hes likely to shoot up near the top of your list of favorite rappers. Sadistik is a true indie artist, and even as his fifth full length solo album (with many EPs in between) Haunted Gardens was entirely self-released, with no record label or publicist behind it. Sadistik is very deliberate about the themes and aesthetic of his albums, and after 2017s dark, aggressive, and misanthropic Altars, Sadistik set out to create a somber, haunting, but beautiful album in Haunted Gardens. On Altars, Sadistik lashed out at the world, while on Haunted Gardens, he is turning inward to find some beauty in the wake of darkness. If you havent heard Sadistik before, I recommend giving Eden a listen, and then diving into the rest of Haunted Gardens. Review by /u/TheNTSocial In his last lines on his previous LP Altars, Sadistik laments the cruel, dishonest, and lonely state of our world: They told us we could be anything They always lie through their teeth They told us we could chase any dream And then we died in our sleep. Sadistik isnt here to refute that bleak outlook on Haunted Gardens. He is still recoiling from a sinister and malevolent world, which he personifies on “8 ½”: The more I see the morbid scenes The more I seem like Morrissey Im moored at sea and mortified With these boulders tied to dormant feet Were born inside a storm that breathes A swarm of bees protects me I feel empty yet I force my teeth. Instead, having accepted that his life has no external meaning, Sadistik seeks to give it meaning himself, and create something beautiful from his pain. These themes of the album are most clearly laid out on “Saints”, where Sadistik raps over a rising violin in the instrumental, Take the grey I find And maybe I can make it light up now Lately I admire how You make things seem lively when Im dying out Words are like a spiderweb, Im spiral bound My la fleur, planting haunted gardens Where the scars are formed Pluck my heart like harpsichords Till one of ours is washed ashore The production across Haunted Gardens is haunting, ethereal, and gorgeous, and perfectly drives the lyrical themes of somberly finding beauty in the wake of suffering. The overall sound of the album is remarkably cohesive, given that there are 15 producers across 13 tracks, a fact which reflects Sadistiks attention to detail in exercising creative control over every aspect of his albums, from his own rapping to production and artwork. There are also no vocal features on this album, which is fitting, as Haunted Gardens is a deeply personal record. Sadistik also raps his ass off for the entire record, showcasing a myriad of flows and incredible rhyming and wordplay. Haunted Gardens opens with the somber and gentle “All My Poisons Sit in Frames”, and Sadistik immediately sets the tone for the album Parents die, beauty dies Blue insides, suicide Death will come for you and I While Im not sure any album opener will ever again be as impactful as Altars “Voodoo Dali”, “All My Poisons Sit in Frames” is a fitting first track which sets the mood and begins to lay down the soundscape for the album. The pace then picks up dramatically with the harrowing but energetic “Eden”, a standout track and the albums first single. Sadistiks flow on this track is incredible, and the incessant pace of his rapping combined with the constantly evolving production almost make you feel like youre free falling through the atmosphere, a feeling which Sadistik evokes in the lyrics Im better off dead, the weather is never enough When effervescent second efforts get me left in the mud Just up above us is a galaxy, grounds all crumble below me A thousand people surround us, inside of mes only lonely The fireflies used to visit to sit on my skin, I miss it When mystery dissipated, you drifted into the distance. “Eden” also begins the dive into the albums recurring theme of codependency: All the trees are neon, I see while I dream Im free And Im beyond the reach of reason, to be or just not to be I feel empty when youre not with me, Ive seen all the scenery Out to sea on a peace you left me, Im ready to sink beneath These lyrics highlight the ephemeral nature of Sadistiks happiness: he may find beauty in his relationships with the people around him, but those people will all die someday, and some of them will leave his life long before then. Sadistik reminds us of this fact in the blunt closing lines of the following track, “8 ½” Every living thing Ill ever know is temporary I can never give up being left alone until Im buried. Nevertheless, Sadistik finds empowerment in this fleetingness of lifes pleasures: everything is going to be gone one day, so all we can do is try to enjoy and find meaning in what we have now. He iterates this on “Eden” with the lines You look into my nucleus Tell me Im too lugubrious, beautiful views elusive We planted our darkest secrets, theyre blooming into petunias. “8 ½” is another standout track, featuring Sadistik switching up his flow multiple times, gliding over beat changes in the stellar production by Televangel, formerly one half of Seattle production duo Blue Sky Black Death. The lyrics touch on a recurring theme in Sadistiks music, the drive to constantly reinvent ones self, often captured in metaphor as dying and being reborn: Thought I told you Im a beast, All I do is die, repeat I piece together puzzles pieces Of my youth to find release […] These seasons seldom change Im rearranging with the furniture She always sees the best in me, I focus on the worst in her. The grandiose and powerful “8 ½” gives way to the somber and resigned “Burning Lakes”, on the hook of which Sadistik gently sings Today Im dirty, tomorrow Ill be dirt I know I wake up early and wobble from the vertigo The lakes are burning, I know I'll be first to go I live and die every day, Im so versatile, peacefully accepting the inevitability of his death and again exploring reinventing himself as a way to cope with the world. “Burning Lakes” is followed by “Daisies”, perhaps the albums most aggressive track which finds Sadistik facing death head on in an incredible display of rapping on the second verse Disembark, disemboweled, this is how I'll kiss the stars I'm picking flowers, now I'm in a garden Reminiscing, been this way since kindergarten Wonder why this kids so guarded I don't wanna live like this, I'm guilty, dehumanized Everybody's waiting to get euthanized The youth in eyes got replaced with the suicide Pacts you survived and a past that you beautified A death sentence for the crucified From best friends to the eulogized Buried with the peasants putrefied Staring at reflections you admired Nooses tied reminding me I'm dying every second I'm alive Sadistik emphasizes that this is not just his fate, but everyones, in the closing lines Look at what becomes of the mighty Calm on the come down but nothings inside Except the daisies Again, Sadistik says, at the end there is no meaning to our lives except the fleeting instances of beauty we create for ourselves, symbolized as flowers here and elsewhere in the album. In the refrain, Sadistik raps “The piss still makes the daisies grow”, reminding us that this fleeting beauty can eventually arise from even the darkest parts of our lives. The explosiveness of “Daisies” is followed by the more controlled, measured “Mans Best Friend”, which features gorgeous production brought to life by vibrant strings and a haunting vocal chorus ushering in a beat switch midway through. Sadistiks delivery in the first verse is measured, deliberate, and powerful, and in the second verse explosive and emotional. Sadistik again laments the fleeting nature of our relationships, this time over a passed dog of his I remember like yesterday when Your body burned but the embers stayed Its only cold since you went away My skull is so full of empty space. But again, in the same track Sadistik celebrates our power to grow and build meaning from loss ”Never left” etched in my flesh, X-X on my eyes Excess stress expressed in a star scape Wrote a love letter, got a death threat tar-laced Made best friends with the marks that the scars make […] I stay in the nadir with stains on my saber To kill what I feel, all the pain and the anger, and so forth Now rain on me please so I can grow more. “Alcoves” is a welcome and somber interlude after the explosive second verses of “Daisies” and “Mans Best Friend”. The highlight of the next track "Coals" is the cold and apathetic chorus I feel like Im walking on these coals and Im so burnt I feel like the boredoms all I know when Im sober. “Sistine Chapel” is another standout, a beautiful love song celebrating the divinity of Sadistiks girlfriend, with Sadistiks flow effortlessly evolving and weaving around the instrumental. The hook is a gorgeous and emotional back-and-forth between the female vocal sample and Sadistik (I want you more than I need you) I swear to God I do! I need you so bad) I see the God in you! Are you coming back, are you coming back. I swear to God I do! Im waiting…) and the crescendo in the second verse is incredible, as desperation builds in his voice leading up to his final declaration Im only human, youre only better Im soaked in fuel, you float with feathers A holy product, Im Onibaba Youre Sistine Chapel, show me god! Sadistiks characteristic dark touch underlies this love song: the beauty of his relationship does not undo the painful experiences in his life, but does soften and liven his present experience. The most uplifting song in the album in “Sistine Chapel” is followed by the morbid “Gallows Hill”, an anthem for Sadistiks cult following. With a wavy flow and tongue-twisting lyrics, Sadistik expresses his distrust for those who fit into a lofty place in society without having experienced lifes hardships, building up to the chorus where he lays out his allegiances “If you float then youre a witch/If you drown youre one of us. Sadistik also reiterates his distrust for those who use religion to find meaning in their lives rather than creating it for themselves with lines like “Taste the Krocodil, imposter prophets often kill for profits too” and “Pulling pistols on Episcopalians with scaly lips”. The next track “Koi” is a heart-wrenching dedication to Sadistiks late father, to whom Sadistiks second LP Flowers For My Father was also dedicated. This track features Sadistiks pain at its barest, and his lyrics are simple but piercing: Your scent lingers like orange peels Its still your face when I see reflections It cuts me open like koi gills Underneath the mask is flammable like an oil field, still I miss the sausage egg McMuffins You got me on my birthday to watch my face adjustments Fathers Days, holidays and functions The days before I got afraid “Koi” is the albums most personal and impactful reminder that our relationships, however cherished, are fundamentally temporary. The second to last track “Saints” is another standout, and together with “Eden” one of the albums singles. Sadistik switches up his flow several times on “Saints” over a knockout beat featuring a beautiful live recorded violin adding to the swell of emotion in the second verse. This track touches on all the biggest themes of the album: finding beauty in the wake of darkness, codependency, rejecting religion. Sadistiks relationship with religion was central to his previous album Altars, and its still intimately linked to Haunted Gardens themes of creating ones own beauty and meaning in life. Sadistik paints losing his religion as illusion-shattering: simultaneously painful and empowering. He describes his search for meaning without religion in the haunting closing track “From the Gossamer” And ever since that day I saw my god upon a stretcher I followed all mirages while Id fall apart in increments And crawled across the desert just to talk to all the string puppets Suffered through the small talk, blanket statements, small pox Im sinking and my corpse is always covered in your fingerprints I dream Im in Elysium but wake up to the same The rapping on the album ends with those lines, giving way to Sadistiks gentle singing in the background, I see the light in your sullen eyes and Ill protect you from the world if I can We were meant for a normal life… He never suggests that he has stopped “following mirages” to search for that meaning. Rather, Haunted Gardens makes it clear that that search is the meaning, a constant journey of discovery, of loss, of reinventing one's self, and of planting ones own meaning and beauty. Haunted Gardens only competes for the title of my favorite album of all time with Sadistiks 2017 LP Altars. Altars is longer and showcases more evolution of Sadistiks perspective on the world over the course of the album, while Haunted Gardens is more narrowly focused. At 33 minutes long, Haunted Gardens never overstays its welcome, and is the perfect length to deliver its message beautifully, and succinctly, while still leaving you wishing for more of the albums ethereal, atmospheric production and Sadistiks incredible rapping. Favorite Lyrics by /u/TheNTSocial You wander for your escape and Ill still mistake it for always The long days of this malaise made me patient amidst the cobwebs And mister melancholy calling turned holidays into hollow days “Eden” Thought I had it all, thought Id live forever Thought the world was small, thought my words could turn to gold I knew what I was searching for I thought that I was thoughtless Thoughts of mine were arsenic Our hollow parts are toxic Howd our heart-to-hearts get arctic? “8 ½” Until the earth is swallowed, hollering How low can I get today? Dark so its like Halloween Dark Souls with the hollowing “8 ½” Im under the weather, been running forever Becoming a martyr for nothing My gardens still covered in mud From the dahlias plucked in abundance Apartments a bucket of blood Im partly to blame when Im placing the blame On the ones that I love “8 ½” You are art like Artemis, flowing through my arteries I was not the architect, but still you are a part of me Apart from seeking out a séance, saying I could part the seas See, I am your apostle, I wont jostle with apostacy “Sistine Chapel” Ive burned alive, arsoned the sinner And since ascended, too sick of winter We left kissed the trigger from sips to benders We spent December alone together Im only human, youre only better Im soaked in fuel, you float with feathers A holy product, Im Onibaba Youre Sistine Chapel, show me God! “Sistine Chapel” A message in a bottle Lessons that I etched as a staccato I go Hattori Hanzo with the gonzo Until I fill the hollows “Saints” Innocent to diffident Indifferent to the dissonance Drifting in and out of indolence Indecent and still in descent Disparate makes desperate Im distant when I ponder on the infinite Walk along the precipice “Saints” Im pantomiming death to stay afloat when Im not with you Trapped in spiderweb blankets woven from the gossamer I made my manias change into azaleas That bloomed from all the wounds I never knew that you could save me from” “From the Gossamer” Singing rhapsodies of peace, pieces of me atrophied A shattered galaxy, we were at an apogee A masterpiece reminding me of things I had but cannot be Dear depression, you robbed me of my essence, Taught me that Im ugly with autopsies of my efforts “From the Gossamer” Talking Points Favorite songs/lyrics? Does the albums central theme of finding beauty in the wake of darkness resonate with you? Is there some danger in the potential of music like this to contribute to romanticizing codependency and depression, beyond providing an outlet for artists and listeners to express and process pain? Sadistik often puts religion at odds with personal freedom, empowerment, and responsibility. Is this dichotomy appropriate? How much room does religion leave for people to build their own meaning? Sadistik is very deliberate and involved in every step of the process in creating his albums, from the production to the artwork to the music videos. How much does the artwork and aesthetic surrounding an album influence your experience of it? Im very interested to hear opinions from people to havent listen to Sadistik (or at least not much) before. In my opinion, hes one of the best rappers out there, and certainly the most underrated.

I'll start this review off by mentioning something specific and unique about this film that proves that I have seen this film while I suspect one reviewer didn't. The film handles the traditional nativity story while modifying the King Herod's attempt to find the Christ child and the Holy Family and murder them. (And, frankly, IMO, that part of the story that leads to the slaughter of the children of Bethlehem is not a suitable subject for family animated movie for children and is wisely left out of this film.) How they changed the King Herod part was to tell the story from the animal's point of view. The donkey Bo, Dave the bird, and Ruth the lamb all notice a new star in the sky and conclude that something great is doing to happen. Now Bo, who is a donkey of a miller, escapes his cruel master, and is adopted by Mary and Joesph. Only after Mary and Joesph leave on their journey to Bethlehem, does Bo learn that Herod has sent a soldier henchman with a long nasty looking sword and two mean chained together dogs to search for Mary and the baby and kill them. Bo enlists the aid of his friend Dave the dove and a lamb named Ruth, to chase after Mary and Joesph in order to warn them of the Soldier hunting them and to protect the holy family. Bo doesn't know why Mary is being hunted. The camels of the Magi, who Bo, Dave, and Ruth don't meet until the end of the film, witness Herod's original plotting. As I said, the film wisely leaves out the massacre of the children of Bethlehem and stops before that point in the biblical narrative means this film does not have a very violent, bloody, and adult scary scene in it for children to watch.
While telling the nativity story from the animals' point of view is not a new idea, using them to modify, and soften Herod's part is.
The animation is stunning in this film.
The story is easy to fallow and treats the traditional nativity story respectfully while infusing the obviously fictional part of the animals talking. It also has jokes in it to keep the tone of the picture light and easy.
The soundtrack's use of the carols and new music is lively, and enjoyable without getting too heavy handed with the religious theme. But the soundtrack doesn't get too light ether. It hits the right balence of seriousness and entertaining.
I would highly recommend taking children to see this film.

I noticed while reading some reddit threads that there is a certain section of the Star Wars fan base that believes that Disney should adapt the two KOTOR games as their new trilogy of movies. This bothers me because the KOTOR games, in particular the first one (which will be my primary focus) do not have a conducive narrative structure to be directly adapted without substantial and foundational changes to become a good movie. There is a fundamental difference in how video games and movies are structured, and this is often part of the reason why video game movies tend to be, well, shit. I intend to break down why the narrative structure used in many popular video games, especially rpgs (which are most big narrative focused games these days) do not translate well at all to the narrative structure of a film script/movie. Part 1: The Pacing and Exploration One of the defining features of video games is the implementation of narrative choice. KOTOR is an rpg, and pushes that element further than most other game genres. A character in KOTOR can make a huge number of choices, such as companion interactions, quest decisions, and moral choices. But there is a principle choice that exists in many exploration focused and open world rpgs that doesn't really get discussed, but is incredibly important when discussing how to convert a video game into a movie adaptation. That is the pacing of the exploration and the focus on the engaging world over the engaging plot. RPGs such as KOTOR tend to allow the player an enormous amount of latitude when it comes to how long they want to spend in an area and how much they want to engage with the side content. KOTOR actually has more difficult enemies at higher levels due to less scaling than you would see in say TES, meaning engaging with the side content is necessary. And in a video game that is not a bad thing. Many of the best quests and moments from that game are in that side content. It can vary from exploring the scenery, talking with NPCs, reading text logs, and side quests. But this creates a fundamental problem when converting it to film. Because there is so much content, and those side quests are so essential to the story and themes of the KOTOR games, you cannot easily cut them from a movie without fundamentally rewriting the story. In KOTOR it is perfectly acceptable to spend hours exploring the ruins of Taris. However, there is supposed to be a ticking clock, and this is an element that would need to be introduced to keep narrative tension in a movie. You see this problem a lot in video games. Skyrim is infamous for having this huge world ending threat, but you can spend 95% of your time dong other stuff and nothing happens. KOTOR 1 in particular has this at several stages. The Taris example is key, as you see Malak grow more and more irritated, but there is nothing pushing the player to actually hurry up and get off world with the key to defeating the Sith. This exploration side of video games also influences how we perceive the plot that brought us to any given point. Since the player is the one finding and fighting for the solution to a problem, we tend to attribute more impact and value to that result than we would as a passive observer (such as in a movie. There are usually several solutions to quests in good RPGs (KOTOR 2 is great at this) and the choice between them gives a narrative dilemma and tension that is not present to an outside observer. In addition, the simple act of following instructions (such as when the party must get into the Sith Base on Taris) results in that plot feeling much stronger than it actually is (an outside character hands the party a solution, you follow a droid that sneaks around and does a thing, then you all break in and fight, really basic and not great as a simple engaging element that is supposed to be like a heist. Part 2: Overall Structure The impact of exploration helps hide some of the weaker elements of the plot of KOTOR 1 that would be painfully apparent in a movie adaptation. While the principle plot is fairly basic and functional (stop the Big Bad Evil Guy and his superweapon is pretty traditional Star Wars) the mechanics of it are, shall we say, trite. It is literally a fetch quest. You find several star maps, see some pretty locales, and take your time as needed in the side quests since if you just blitzed the star maps you would have a real short experience. And in a video game, this works. Because it is a scavenger hunt, some of the narrative tension of stopping Malak is lessened. But the actual driving force of the plot is a series of MacGuffins, which are unrelated to any character development or growth. Most side characters are completely independent of the plot in KOTOR 1 (something that is much better in KOTOR 2) and you would basically need to invent a reason for Revan to go get the Star Maps besides wanting to get it on with Bastilla and "Destiny. If you were watching KOTOR as a movie, most of the plot would be similar to the Rise of Skywalker, jump from one planet to the next, see a neat set piece, move on. There is basically no character interaction in the plot. Bastilla is the only character who actually changes, and even that is somewhat contrived. The structure of the game's main plot is also very basic and would not keep an audience engaged. You have the initial escape from Taris, which is mostly about self preservation and so doesn't involve the characters. You have the brief training montage on Dantooine, then you start the scavenger hunt. You get to explore things like Maanaan's neutrality and the Sith Code on Korriban, but in a movie these would be fleeting at best and lack the impact of engaging with and making decisions that the game possesses. And what makes a lot of video games great is that the player can chooes the direction of the plot, but this in turn really limits the narrative tools you can use without making the player feel forced into something. This is another reason why KOTOR failed to create a dynamic and character driven plot, because you cannot predict what kind of character the player is playing. Part 3: Why Obsidian is still making good games and Bioware isn't KOTOR 2 is vastly better than KOTOR 1, and I don't think that is really debatable. I'm speaking from a purely narrative driven direction. Obsidian made the game progress so that you can see things like character growth, debates on morality, deep themes, and more. I think this is because Obsidian actually made an effort to include things from the narratives of movies that Bioware skimped on because the exploration aspect of KOTOR 1 was so strong. If you think about something like the character interactions in KOTOR 2, you can see that other than some emergent events in the world, most of it can be done without relying on exploring. You could easily import many of these elements into a movie and see a great story. KOTOR 2 actually has themes of determinism, self reliance, and morality, KOTOR 1 breaks down to "kicking puppies is bad. oooh you were dead all along (basically. and "ooh look at all the Star Warsy stuff. I think this is why you see Bioware shifting away from the various narrative elements in their games to focus on exploration and short side quests (Dragon Age Inquisition was the start of this, but Anthem is by far its apotheosis. Obsidian on the other hand went much further in on character interactions, themes, philosophy, and actually having a cohesive and well paced story (see Tyranny, PoE 1&2, The Outer Worlds. Bioware has always been more reliant on having interesting character to talk to and explore than characters that develop. Bioware has always made their worlds with a focus on cool things to see instead of things that connect to the characters. Could you make a good movie off of KOTOR 2? It would take some trimming but the bones of a movie narrative structure are there (unlike most video games. You start similarly to KOTOR 1, trapped and needing to escape. But instead of a generic enemy you have a cool mystery of killer robots, and a villain with an excellent visual design attacking you. This leads organically to Telos, where you must reach the surface and encounter a character with a deep personal connection to the protagonist. This leads to you going after each Jedi Master to save the galaxy, but also to understand your character's personal struggle and loss of the force. Then you must confront each villain, who represents a different theme on how we react to a loss of control (Nihlism (Nihlus) Indulging(Sion) Violent attempt to take Control Back (Kreia. and deal with your own solution to that question. The structure of the narrative can be cut down to movie length and maintain the key themes and ideas, and you can keep several side characters for their arcs (Hand maiden, Atton, and Visas are who I would go with. But this is because Obsidian writes their stories to a much higher (arguably more cinematic) standard than most rpgs. The only games with a comparable focus on themes and characters is the Last of Us, and the Witcher 3 (both about parenthood. I don't believe you should write a KOTOR 2 movie, since it is somewhat reliant on the first game's plot being known to you, but it is doable. Conclusion: How to move Star Wars and Video game adaptations forwards Honestly this reactionary dive towards things that Star Wards has done well in the past is the wrong direction to take the franchise. It is arguably what sank the writing of Rise of Skywalker. As much as I have issues with how the Last Jedi handled its tone and plot, I do agree that Star Wars needs to try things that are novel. Star Wars is a great setting and you can write great characters in it. The Mandalorian is a great example of this. You could do a great KOTOR prequel about the Mandalorian Wars, and basically make a great redo of the Prequels. You could do a trilogy about pirates in the outer rim. You could do an X-Wing trilogy. There are loads of options. But blindly going back to well reviewed Star Wars products and recreating them is what caused this mess (I don't think it is an accident that the terrible Dark Empire comic shared a lot of plot elements with Rise of Skywalker. In terms of video game adaptations, Hollywood is slowly getting it. What makes video games great is exploration and player choice. Because of this video game worlds like in Bioshock, Mass Effect, and even the KOTOR games are very well built and thoroughly designed, with loads of things to pull from. Assassin's Creed, despite being a bad movie, did at least understand that you don't need to do a straight 1:1 copy of the structure of the original video game, you just need to couch it in the same world. You can set movie and TV adaptations in the world of a property and get many of the same benefits, while keeping the narrative and character focused elements that make an engaging piece of non-interactive media. Non-interactive media tends to skip the world step, and stumbles because of it ( cough Bright cough, I just want a god damn Shadow Run movie, is that too much to ask. I don't think people really want to see a 3 hour fetch quest with the big twist that was only as impactful as it was because it connected a NPC with a PC. But you can still use those characters, you can still take elements, side quests, and world building from KOTOR 1 and 2 and create a good movie out of it. We might see the Rakghoul storyline in the Mandalorian. You could see the Manaan kolto selling dilemna in a regular mainline movie. You can do a KOTOR prequel. But adapting the game in anything close to actually being an adaptation would bring the limits of both types of media to full display.
